Meet the staff – Joyline

Tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Joyline.  I am married to Dennie and I’ve been blessed with three kids, a teenager and twins. I am the house mother at the resource centre.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

I start work at around 1600hrs (I know, I know. That’s an odd time to start, you’re right). This is right before the students conclude their day at school making it a great time to start actually. To start with, I check all my emails as I generally receive updates from the three schools. At times we have sick students at the resource centre and I usually pop around to see how they are doing. Another thing I do quite often, in cooperation with the Gap Year Students is chairing meetings that we hold with the students at random evenings. During the week, there are students who have school societies after hours and I am responsible for picking them up from school and dropping them at the resource centre.

What does it feel like to be part of the Makomborero team?

It hasn’t been long since I joined Makomborero but I can already attest that it has been amazing so far. It’s always a joy to work with teenagers and to also listen to what they have to say; being part of Makomborero makes this easier than ever.

What would you say have been the highlights of your job so far?

Take me back to the time we did home visits for our incoming lower sixes! I really enjoyed the window into the kinds of backgrounds our students come from. It was a pleasure to speak with their families and to see how different people do it in their homes.

What are your hopes for the future of Makomborero?

My hope is we foster a Makomborero where each year we do better than the previous year. It doesn’t matter how well we might be doing in the moment, there is always room for improvement.

Wise words to young people?

The counsel you receive from your parents comes from a place of love rather than a place of deterring you from your desires. Take heed to them always.

What do you do to unwind?

I usually goof around with my family and I enjoy listening to music.
