Tanaka’s Community Action Programme

Between the 14th and the 24th of August, I had the incredible opportunity of running my Community Action Program at Highfield 1 High School in Harare, Zimbabwe. Through my partnership with the school and Netro Electronics Zimbabwe, we introduced the Python computer programming language and robotics to students in their last 3 years of high school.

In two weeks, we were able to make great strides in giving the students and understanding of what it means to solve day to day problems through communicating with computers and machines. For most of the students, Python, and computer programming was a totally new concept so the enthusiasm and curiosity were absolutely at its peak.

Group work enabled students to share and employ newly learned concepts to create small, functional programs. Since our program was intended mainly to expose these students to a whole new world, we were extremely grateful to hear their positive feedback. Some of the students came back with challenges and opportunities that they had encountered during their personal time of experimenting.

Going forward, we are working with the students to give them the opportunity to advance their programming skills. We have given them online and offline resources as well as our guaranteed support in order for them to get the most out of the program.
