Student Stories – Bright

SONY DSC2014 marked my last year at Makomborero Zimbabwe having joined the family last year from Zengeza High School. Words can’t fully express my appreciation towards what Makomborero has done for me.

I can recall the loud sound of water splashing on rocks along the Save river during the rainy season. Grandmother and I would wake up early to work the fields. Most of my childhood I was with my grandmother, Mom visited from Hwedza where she stayed with my other granny and helped her in the fields and Dad travelled a lot working on farms. I moved to Harare when I was about to start primary school, at the moment my father was working at a tobacco processing company. I did my O-level at Zengeza High School in Chitungwiza. The challenges surrounding us that we could not escape from motivated us to work hard and achieve the best. I remember when I was in form two where our class had seven textbooks. This meant that we had to share a book among seven students.

When I received the scholarship I knew this was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. For once my family would not worry about my school fees and uniforms. I enrolled at Saint Georges College, a school I never saw myself at. Everything that a student would wish for was available at Saint Georges College. I got to experience practical science, something we never got from my former school. I also got an opportunity to discover my talents in sports and other extra-curricular activities. Before enrolling at Saint Georges all that mattered was getting good grades in class but at Saints I learnt that you can achieve both in class and at the fields.

Makomborero has taught me to use my gifts for the good of others. The community service projects that we engaged in during the two years opened up my mind. I never realized how something that might be regarded as insignificant might change someone’s life.

I am really grateful for Makomborero and Saint Georges College for giving me an education that I never dreamt of. Most importantly thank you for changing my mind and I hope that one day I will be able to touch people’s lives the same way that Makomborero did to me and many other past Makomborero students.

Bright achieved 3 A’s in his A-levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
