BIG GIVE AND BIG ACHIEVEMENTS

The month of November feels like it’s sped past. We are gearing up for our December events which we cannot wait to tell you about at the end of the year. This month has been all about celebrating more of our student’s achievements and, as it’s #GivingTuesday today, we’re kicking off our BigGive 2025 Campaign!

MORE WINNERS!
We are beaming with pride as we celebrate the incredible achievements of our Makomborero students at Gateway High School’s Prize Giving Day! Their hard work, dedication, and brilliance continues to shine brightly:

  • Blessing: Grooming Award, Merit Award, Best in A2 Chemistry, Best in A2 Biology, U6 Maths Cup, and the coveted Science Trophy
  • Tafadzwa: DHL Senior Attainment Trophy for Best AS Results
  • Leona: Lower 6 Maths Cup, Merit Award, and Best in AS Chemistry

Each of these achievements represents hours of perseverance, a thirst for learning, and the invaluable support from their teachers, peers, and communities. Well done, Tafadzwa, Leona, and Blessing—you’ve made us all so proud!

ANOTHER GRADUATION!
It doesn’t matter how many times we hear news of past Makomborero students graduating, with each one, we leap with joy and ooh and ahh as we view graduation photos in the office. This month we say huge congratulations to Daisy! Let’s hear what she has to say:
‘I attended Kuwadzana 2 High School on a Makomborero Non-Residential Scholarship and completed A-Level in 2018. I recently graduated with a first-class degree in Mechanical Engineering at Academic City University College in Ghana. I’m grateful to Makomborero and Mastercard Foundation ALA Program for funding my studies. I am looking forward to working in the automobile industry and improving transportation systems in the continent of Africa.’

Well done Daisy! We are so proud of you!

IT’S A WRAP
The Mobile Science Lab and the Girl Child Mentorship Programme both held their final sessions in the month of November. Ndepi! Small Business Training has since held its final session and all that was left was for us to take photos and videos of participants’ incredible projects. Many thanks to the trio that is past student Nokutenda, Gap Year student Tinaye and Makomborero Driver Mr Johnwell who criss-crossed Harare capturing these images. We are looking forward to sharing them with you in the very near future.
For the Mobile Science Lab, the last session was an incredible day of teamwork, science, and joy! Working on physics projects to solve real-world challenges in the communities of the students, designing circuits to match their solutions and presenting them with confidence. Teamwork and creativity at its finest!
The day also included a practical biology session on respiration, complete with outdoor activities, pulse-taking, and engaging discussions led by Mr. N. After a delicious lunch, they kept the energy high with their traditional football match, ending the day with huge smiles all around. It’s always bittersweet to say goodbye, but we’re so proud of their growth over the 5 weeks!

Nov

Mentees and mentors at the Girl Child Mentorship Programme shared a final lunch of hot dogs and salad, followed by ice-cream as they celebrated the end of 2024. They had a fantastic talk from Mrs A. There was some much needed encouragement for their journeys ahead with a focus on how to see good in everything, including nature. All 31 mentees graduated and were sent off with a certificate and a mug full of sweet treats. We are so proud of all the skills they learnt and all that they have given back to their families and communities.
Amongst many other things, they picked up litter at their 3 schools in the high density suburbs of Harare and they crocheted 3 baby blankets that will go to 3 teen mums at a hospital in Harare!
For both projects, we were able to send each mentee home with lentils and e’Pap (a nutrient-dense instant porridge) for their families, thanks to a local Zimbabwean donor.

GLITZ AND GLAMOUR – PROM SEASON

Gateway High, Hellenic Academy and St Georges College all celebrated their Prom Dances in November. It took an army of staff, donors, volunteers, partner schools and parents at partner schools to produce the effortless glitz and glamour that you see represented in these pictures. We are so grateful to all of them!

IN OTHER NEWS
Remember the visit from the Finnish team? They left our UZ students with a 1000 piece puzzle that has been causing both relief away from the books as well as sleepless nights. Here it is, all completed! Well done to all 18 of them.
In the A-Level boarding house, swimming was one of the go-tos for time away from the books. With the high temperatures in Harare in this season, we are grateful that our donated house came with such a luxury that has been serving students for the past 9 years.
While we are talking about the A-Level boarding house, an area rarely appreciated is the upkeep of the house which often includes patching and fixing that is on-going. We are so grateful to donors and sponsors who enable us to keep the house so well-maintained.

AND FINALLY

As we enter this very busy season, the season now popularly known as the giving season, we leave you this wonderful quote from Quincy Jones as inspiration and encouragement.

‘Imagine what a harmonious world it could be if every single person, both young and old shared a little of what he is good at doing.’
