On the first day of the competition, we were put into groups to work in solving a problem to do with biological resource evaluation and application.
The group had only Chinese students, and they barely spoke and understood English. No digital translators were allowed. Honestly, I thought it was over for me because communication was going to be a problem. However, on the day I ended up enjoying their company and working with them as they used gestures and the few English words they knew to communicate with me. In turn , I had to speak slowly so that they would grasp each of the words I said.
On the second day, I completed two individual scientific tasks. Honestly , the challenges were very practical and complex. Completing them taught me that classroom content is simple and that I should be able to do it excellently if I am to do something greater in this world.
Even though it was hard, I won the UNISOC INNOVATION AWARD for exceptional performance in individual and group challenges that we were given on-site . The award is accompanied by a yen cash prize.
We had the privilege of visiting the Shacman Company Frame cutting factory. It was really inspiring to see automated machines complete the process of making vehicle chassises. This is the future of AI and machine learning in other parts of the world that we just saw!
I enjoyed the immersive show showing the history of the Qi Dynasty. The displays were very modern, technologically advanced, and very beautiful.
As part of our experience, we also went to a museum in Shaanxi. I enjoyed learning the history of the unification of the Chinese dynasties and the positive impacts that came along with that.
Talking of food….. Chinese food is delicious. I enjoyed the mushrooms and shrimps. I had fun eating rice with chopsticks for the first time! Surprisingly, I was good at using them.
My visit to China is one of the most memorable experiences that I have ever had. The technological advancements of China that I saw will continue to inspire me as a young scientist, and this will give me a drive to work towards a better Zimbabwe.
