WRITTEN BY MERCY
In the month of May we welcomed back our A-Level students who had been on a well-deserved break for the school holidays. Just before schools opened, our non-residential students gathered for a catch up over tea and doughnuts. There were lots of stories exchanged as well as lots of smiles and laughs! The residential students were treated to a special welcome meal on their first day in the boarding house! No-one was happier to see them than our beautiful boarding house dog, Rocket who was lonely and a little under the weather during the holidays.
Our application process has begun!
We are excited to announce that application forms for the 2026 Makomborero Zimbabwe A-Level Scholarship are now available. The team in Zimbabwe has been busy delivering the application forms for the 2026 intake. For 5 days, 4 team members travelled over 800km through the high density and rural areas in and around the outskirts of Harare. Just under 600 application forms were distributed to 58 schools. The application window opened on the 14th of May 2025 and it will close on the 27th of June 2025. The application form is available to download and print from here.
What have the students been up to?
A few of our A-Level students popped in before the holidays ended to write their SATs in preparation for university applications. Well done to them for thinking ahead!
During the holidays, students got up to all sorts! Holiday lessons, group discussions, peaceful walks as well as looking after animals. We are loving this photo of Charles posing with a goat during the holidays.
Well done to Tinevimbo who went on a St Georges College hockey tour to Zambia. She had a fantastic time experiencing a different country and different cultures and of course playing one of her favourite sports. We are so chuffed for her!
Hellenic Academy students Noku and Charnice went away for a Biology and Geography school camp to the mighty Zambezi river! It was a real adventure for these two lovely ladies with lots of outdoor experiences. Don’t tell anyone but our Zimbabwe staff are planning on sneaking into the next trip.
On to our university students, here is Brighton who is currently studying Geomatics Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe. He was kind enough to send us a photo from one of his GPS practical sessions. We are proud of Brighton making an impact on both now and the future!
Back to our projects
Ndeipi! small business training was back with a bang! Participants learnt how to present project proposals, an essential part of their year long journey.
The Girl Child Mentorship also takes mentees on a year-long journey of being mentored by Makomborero alumni. We were excited to welcome all our mentees back to term 2. They kicked off with some fantastic games and some hilarious tales from their holiday.
Last but not least, our Mobile Science lab started for term 2. 15 new students were introduced to staff, taught our policies and procedures before having a tour of the mobile lab. We are anticipating another wonderful term in the lab!
Food, fun and Africa day
Mr and Mrs A and family had a great time during one of their visits to the boarding house. They shared a lovely meal together as they caught up on the holidays and shared plans for the term ahead. Makomborero alumni kindly donated some games which the Albertyns had fun teaching the students.
In celebration of Africa Day on the 25th of May, office staff shared traditional Zimbabwean meals together. One of the meals is peanut butter rice, goat meat and pumpkin leaves. Delicious!
And finally
It really has been a great start to the term. Thank you for all your generous donations and sponsorship. We have loved distributing shoes, games, clothes and food from you to our students. We are looking to pay university fees in the next couple of months, thanks to your donations! Thank you for ‘cultivating’ the knowledge of Makomborero students through all that you give. We leave you with this wonderful African proverb, ‘Knowledge is a garden. If it isn’t cultivated, you can’t harvest it.’
Mercy on behalf of Mark and Laura Albertyn and the whole Makomborero team
