Celebrations & Lots of Excitement

SUCCESS AT OUR ANNUAL SUPPORTERS EVENT
Makomborero has had the privilege of educating high-achieving-low-income students from Zimbabwe for 14 years now! Alongside the A-Level Scholarship, we have successfully run the Girl Child Mentorship Programme, Mobile Science Lab, Ndeipi! Small business training, Mutsidzira Alumni business grants and various other community projects. In the busyness of life, opportunities to gather and celebrate are few. We are so excited to have had our Annual Supporters Event in London on Thursday 3rd April 2025. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear from Co-founder Laura about the work Makomborero is doing in Zimbabwe. Look out for more details about this event in the next newsletter!

JOINING THE WORLD IN CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL DAYS
March gave us the opportunity to celebrate some important days along with the rest of the world. World Book Day gave us an insight into some of the staff in Zimbabwe’s favourite books and International Women’s Day had us cheering the many women who make up the Makomborero family. Soon after was the Global Recycling Day and staff and students in Zimbabwe were loud and proud about their recycling of plastic and tins at both the A-Level boarding house and the University Residence. We had four fantastic poems for World Poetry Day. Here is  a poem from new-to-Makomborero Lower student Kudakwashe Gwendu cleverly entitled ‘Poetry’.

CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER
We are proud to celebrate Tinashe and Matifadza for their outstanding achievements this month. Tinashe recently won a Gold Medal at the Zimbabwe Science Fair! His novel project was a model of a protein designed to accelerate the healing of heart tissue after a heart attack. It stood out to judges for its innovation and potential impact. Well done Tinashe!

Matifadzaishe won a gold medal in the Association of Trust Schools chess competition. She is an avid chess player and we wish her all the very best in future matches!  Well done Matifadzaishe!

DITRIBUTION OF TABLETS TO A-LEVEL NON-RESIDENTIAL STUDENTS
Each year, Makomborero is privileged to be able to give out tablets to Non-Residential Lower Sixth students. Tablets are pre-loaded with study aides, past exam papers and a few lessons. This will go a long way to helping with revision through their two A-Level years, particularly with power cuts that can be 24 hours long. We are so grateful to all our sponsors and donors who make it possible to add such a life-changing element to our student’s education.

HUNGRY ANYONE?
Wednesday nights are vegetable casserole nights at the boarding house. We feel very blessed to be in a country with a wide variety of seasonal vegetables, some which come from the boarding house grounds. This season is all about green beans, carrots, okra and butternuts. Aunty Patricia makes the best meals! Here she is shopping for vegetables as well as cooking in the kitchen with Gap Year student Blessing playing the role of sous chef.
If you weren’t hungry, you must be hungry now?

FINALLY
We are really grateful for such a fun and exciting month. We have also had some wonderful rains in Harare! The lightning and thunder wasn’t to everyone’s taste but we are appreciating the plant growth and the rise in water tables. We leave you with this wonderful African Proverb, ‘Love, like rain, does not choose the grass on which it falls. Wherever you are in the world, we are wishing you love or rain or both!

Thank you
Thank you to our donors and sponsors for all you give to make the work of Makomborero keep going.
