An update from Mark and Laura Albertyn – First Term 2014

Well what a year it has been so far!! We have come to the end of a very eventful term.

We welcomed our new 8 Lower Sixth into our boarding house and have been so impressed with how quickly they have settled into their schools and the boarding house. We have begun to see them blossom. The Upper Sixth have really matured, found their confidence and taken up their position as new leaders of the house. It has filled us with great joy to see them grow over this last year and we are excited for what all their futures hold. Both Lower and Upper Sixth received outstanding reports this term.

Results
We waited for our Cambridge results with baited breath and were not disappointed – our outgoing Upper Sixth of 2013 did us so proud and their hard work paid off! 11 A*, 6 A’s and 3 B’s.

Our external students Zimsec A-level results were 7 A’s, 3 B’s, 2 C’s and 2 D’s – we were also proud of their accomplishments and the small part we could play in assisting them. Now these students look to their futures – applying to local universities and for external scholarships.

Our incoming Lower Sixth received their O’level results once they had started with us and these results thankfully just confirmed we had made a good choice!! A’s – 72 in total, 10 B’s and 2 C’s. We have yet again taken on a further 8 external Lower Sixth students who also performed so well at O’level 63 A’s, 9 B’s and 2 C’s.

Finnish Team Trip
What a wonderful week we had hosting a team from Finland. We had done a cultural exchange with them via the internet a year before and it was so great to finally meet some of them in the flesh, to share Makomborero Zimbabwe with them but also to have them visit and see the varying schools in Zimbabwe – rural, township, city and private. They whole-heartedly threw themselves into all the activities we had planned for them. They led assembly at a local township school, painted black boards at a rural school, visited city schools, spent time at an inspiring orphanage, spent evenings getting to know our students etc. It was a memorable time for all and we so appreciated their generosity and kindness towards us. We had a wonderful end to the trip climbing up Domboshava together. Thank you Anna for organising your team and spending time with us!!

Finnish Visit

2014 Science Olympiad
Our Upper Sixth Students all entered the Olympiad this year and we now wait for the results – hoping that some of them will benefit from a fully sponsored trip to South Africa!

USAP
Two of our students made it onto the USAP programme again this year – Ntombi and Clive – we are thrilled for both of them!!! We are so thankful for all the time that Mai Mano invests into them during this time on USAP and we also appreciate the time she gives to each of our students, even those who did not make USAP.

Former USAP students (Class of 2013) Taringana and Lisa – both received full Scholarships to the United States. Taringana to Dartmouth University and Lisa to Wellesley College. We were thrilled for them and for what this opportunity holds for them. Tinotenda has received a full scholarship to McGill University in Canada. For the rest of the class of 2013 their destinies will become clearer in the next month or so as they continue to apply for scholarships and to local
universities.

USAP Students

Black History Month Essay Competition
Our students took part in the Black History Month Essay Competition run by the Education USA department of the US Embassy. Ruvimbo came 3rd and we were so proud
of her achievements. We attended an awards tea at the US Ambassadors House.

Academic & Sport Colours
We would like to congratulate the following students for receiving full Academic colours from Hellenic for their outstanding O’level results – Lazarus and Joseph. We would also like to congratulate Bright and Clive for obtaining half academic colours for their outstanding academic work. Joseph should be congratulated too on his achievement of half colours for Athletics. They all attend St Georges.

Pioneer Students
It has been wonderful to hear from our students as they come to the end of their 1st year at University. Tinashe Rwodzi has been given a full scholarship through MasterCard to African University in Mutare. This is an incredible opportunity for him. Mike Muponda also received a full MasterCard Scholarship to attend West Virginia University. We have become partners with African Leadership Academy who run a MasterCard Scholarship in Southern Africa and we have been invited to attend a conference in Rwanda in the next two weeks with Mike and Tinashe. Mark will be attending this too!

Camping!
We ended this term with a wonderful camp at Mbizi on the outskirts of Harare. We hired an overland truck for the night and all camped and enjoyed being together. We also invited all past students and those who could come did. What a great time catching up and spending time together as a family. The students all took part in a team building exercises and on a (very) high rope course which they all thoroughly enjoyed!! This is something we hope to do every couple of years, reuniting hearts and remembering that we are still one big family!

Camping trip

We would like to welcome another local sponsor this year Carnaud Metalbox. Thank you again to all our sponsors, without your support we would not be able run
Makomborero and we are so grateful!
